Live Race Course

5K Run Course: Please note, the course was changed slightly from our first two years. We no longer have access to the neighboring property so we have added the distance lost to the u-turn at the top of Western Maryland Parkway. That u-turn will be moved up Western Maryland parkway towards the traffic circle. As before, the 5K Run will be a”lolly pop style” course design, starting and ending at Antietam Brewery. The course has slightly rolling hills and is rated as an easy to moderate course. There will be a water stop around the 1.3 and 2.5 mile mark and water at the finish line.

-Begin in the Brewery parking lot and run clockwise around the building
-Turn left onto Tandy Drive staying on the left side
-U-turn  clockwise on Tandy Drive (setup by races officials)
-Proceed down Tandy Drive on the left side
-Turn Left onto the left shoulder (running against traffic) of Western Maryland Parkway
-Proceed through the u-turn clockwise (setup by race officials)
-Proceed up Western Maryland Parkway on the left shoulder (running against traffic)
-Proceed through the u-turn on the north end of Western Maryland Parkway (setup by race officials)
-Proceed down Western Maryland Parkway on the left shoulder (running against traffic).
-Turn left onto Tandy Drive and run on the right side (with traffic)
-Proceed through U-turn counter clockwise (setup by race officials)
-Proceed down Tandy Drive on the right side (running with traffic)
-Turn right into Antietam Brewery parking lot
-Proceed around the building (counter clockwise) to the finish

Beer Mile: The Beer Mile will consist of four 1/4 mile laps around Antietam Brewery property, with a 12 oz beer consumed before each lap. Beer must be consumed in the designated beer drinking zone before the next lap can begin. The course is flat and fast!

Start: We will use a mass start for the 5K and a wave format for the Beer Mile. The start of the 5K will be a “single file” line with a continual rolling start. We will line the field up across the parking lot, “single file”, 6 feet apart, and once all runners are staged we will fire the gun. The line will move through the starting arch in single file without stopping. No waves. Families can gather in line together (max 4) and those within the same group (max 4). We anticipate this taking up to 5 minutes to get everyone started. We will invite faster runners to move to the front of the line and walkers to the very back. Your time will not start until you cross the timing mat at the start line. We ask that no one passes the person in front of them, and stay 6 feet apart, until across the start line. We will also invite the top runners (those who expect to finish in the top 5 male and top 5 female overall) into the starting chute. The single file line will start outside the chute.

The Beer Mile will still start with 3 waves with a max of 20 people per wave (this is usually 40 per wave). We will social distance the participants at the start with designated spots to stand. We will also spread out each participants beers to be 6 feet apart from the neighboring participant.

Timing: This event will be professionally chip timed using disposable bib tags on the back of the race bibs! Bibs must be worn on the front of your shirt and be visible at all times. We will be providing race day results at our results kiosk immediately after you finish your race. We will also provide a web link to results that you can share with your family and friends so they can follow your race on their web devices.

Beer Mile Details: This is all about fun and celebrating Antietam Brewery beer! The Antietam Brewery Beer Mile will be 4 laps, consuming a 12 ounce beer before each lap, capped at 40 20 participants per wave (3 waves total). The race begins with the sound of the starting horn and participants will drink their first beer prior to leaving the beer drinking zone. Once the beer is consumed they will run a lap counter-clockwise around the building and return to the beer drinking zone. They will repeat until 4 beers and 4 laps are complete and on the final lap they will finish through the finish arch. The course is flat, paved and fast! Anyone who vomits at any point will have a 5-minute penalty added on to their time.

The official beer that will be consumed during the Beer Mile: General’s Golden Ale (will meet the 5% alcohol by volume minimum requirement for the Beer Mile). General’s Golden Ale is the original beer of the beer mile and highly requested by past beer milers. It is a refreshing golden classic light ale brewed with wheat & a blend of American & New Zealand hops. The beer will be served in a can and served chilled! We will control the temperature to be colder than room temp but not too cold to chug.

Beer Mile Waves: Our capacity will be 120 60 participants total, 3 waves of 40 20 participants per wave. We created a question for registration that allows you to register for the wave of your choice. For slower participants, we ask that you choose wave 1 or 2 so if you do not finish within the 20 minutes allowed for each wave you can remain on course while the new wave starts. There is no time limit for this event but we must have all participants off course by 12:30pm. Please see the schedule for details.

Beer Mile History: The “Beer Mile” event has been gaining in popularity over the past few years. However, only a brave few have given it a try. Some top runners have set some incredible records (Men’s Record is 4:33.6 set by Corey Bellemore in 2017 from Canada, Women’s Record is 6:08.0 set by Erin O’Mara from USA) and you can find events all over the country. Most beer mile events are held on a track but some have taken to the streets. The Antietam Brewery Beer Mile will be on black top navigating around the building where the brewery is located. Spectators will enjoy watching the 30 individuals make an attempt to successfully complete the 4 laps and 4 beers. We have provided some links below to help you get educated on this type of event.
